John Rogan (8 ft 9 in)

John Rogan is one of 17 known people in medical history to reach a height of 8 feet or more and he is also the second tallest person ever, after Robert Wadlow. Rogan’s extreme size led to him suffering from severe ankylosis, a condition that leaves the joints stiff due to inflammation. By 1899, he had grown to a height of 8 ft 6 in (2.59 m) and often appeared in newspapers, referred to as the “negro giant”. He got around on a cart he had made for himself that was pulled by goats, and he was always the center of attention, often noted for his deep voice and playful attitude. He is the tallest person of African descent.


Robert Wadlow (8 ft 11.1 in)

In all of recorded history, no one seemed to have breached the 9-feet mark. The tallest man who ever lived, Robert Wadlow, was just a few centimeters shy of reaching 9 feet tall. He was also known – the Alton Giant and the Giant of Illinois, due to the fact that he was born and raised in Alton, Illinois. Wadlow reached 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m)[2][4][5] in height and weighed 439 lb (199 kg) at his death at age 22. Even at the time of his death, he showed no indication of an end to his growth. he suffered from hypertrophy of the pituitary gland, causing him to produce massive amounts of human growth hormone. The Illinois resident was so large that a special desk had to be built for him in school. Doctors at the time had no treatment for this kind of hormonal imbalance. He was born in 1918 and died in 1940. Nearly 40,000 people attended his funeral.
