Edinburgh Castle has been the site of torture and many bloody battles during its time. Visitors and staff of this now tourist destination, have experienced many things over the years. The most common is the feeling of being touched and pulled, as well as the sighting of apparitions. There are also reports of ghost dogs, a headless drummer, and the bodies of prisoners taken during the French seven-year war and the American War of Independence. In 2001, the castle vaults and chambers were subjected to a rigorous 10-day scientific survey, using night-vision equipment, digital cameras, thermal imaging, and 240 carefully-screened volunteers.

9. The Beechworth Lunatic Asylum Australia

Opened in 1867, this asylum was open to literally everyone, from patients admitted by family to those found wandering the streets and the criminally insane. The Beechworth Lunatic Asylum — originally called Mayday Hills Lunatic Asylum, at its highest capacity, 1,200 patients lived there. Several different apparitions have been reported here, from the cellars to the uppermost parts of the buildings. Disembodied screams are often heard, and heavy doors are seen to open and slam shut of their own accord.
